Sustainable Forest Management

Responsible timber harvesting to improve forest health, enhance wildlife habitat, and support the long-term stewardship of Houghton University's forest lands.

Stewarding Our Natural Resources

Houghton University’s campus has over 1,300 acres overlooking the scenic Genesee River Valley, including forested areas that are home to our hiking trails, disc golf courses, ropes course and outdoor classrooms for courses in biology, ecology and outdoor recreation. At Houghton, we take seriously God’s call to steward our natural resources well and are taking steps to improve the long-term health and sustainability of our forested property.

Following recommendations from professional foresters, Houghton University is undertaking selective timber harvest designed to improve our forest’s health, enhance wildlife habitats and support long-term stewardship efforts. The project is estimated to take 18-24 months.

Improve Forest Health

Selective harvesting removes overcrowded, diseased, or declining trees, creating space and resources for healthy trees to grow and thrive.

Investing in Houghton’s Mission

Selective harvesting will result in financial resources that will be invested in Houghton’s Scholar-Servant Fund, which supports students’ complete college experience from academic life to spiritual life to residence life.

Enhance Biodiversity

Creating openings in the forest canopy encourages the growth of native plants and improves habitat diversity for wildlife.
